What information do you need to choose a coating?
A coating recommendation is only as good as the information behind it. RCC (Rema Corrosion Control) uses the checklist below to match a coating to your chemical exposure, substrate and site conditions. Gather these answers before requesting a recommendation, and be specific about chemicals and concentrations.
1. Chemical environment
- List each chemical and its percentage
- Operating temperature
2. Type of corrosion
- Atmospheric
- Splash or spillage
- Immersion (see choosing a lining)
3. Substrate
- Steel
- Concrete
- Other
4. Impediments
- Edges
- Crevices
5. Application environment
- Indoors or outdoors
- Geographic area
- Dry or damp
6. Allowable surface preparation
- Sandblasting
- Hand cleaning
7. Allowable method of application
- Spray
- Brush
- Roller
8. Desired aesthetics
- Gloss retention and chalking
- Color stability
- UV resistance
- Stain resistance
9. Past history
Describe what has been used on the surface before and how it performed.
When do you need a lining instead of a coating?
If the surface will be immersed in chemicals, such as the inside of a tank, sump or trench, you generally need a lining rather than a coating. Coatings suit atmospheric, splash and spillage exposure. For immersion service, use the lining checklist, which asks about upset temperatures, tank history and physical abuse.
Why do edges and crevices matter?
Coatings tend to pull thin over sharp edges and cannot easily bridge crevices, so those spots are where corrosion usually starts. Flag them on your checklist so the recommendation can address edge preparation, stripe coats or a different system, before the coating goes on.
How do I get a coating recommendation?
Send PCT your answers to the checklist and we will work with RCC to recommend a coating that fits. Request a quote, or see RCC and our corrosion protection products.
